Myofascial Release

Pain can be relentless and debilitating and commonly stems from a combination of lack of mobility, stiffness, tiredness and emotional upset. People often experience intermittent pain for many months or years which, despite treatment and specialist assessments, no cause or diagnosis is found. Skilled soft tissue therapy uses a unique tactile approach to feel what is going on in your body and identify tight and tender areas that do not show up on scans, X Ray or MRI.

Pain often originates from restriction in movement of one segment of the body, causing another area of the body to work harder than it is designed to. These 'workaholic' segments become exhausted from working too hard and usually lead to pain. We listen to your information, palpate your body and identify areas of restriction and imbalance that harbour your pain.

Using specific Myofascial Release (MFR) techniques, treatment helps to release your stiff areas and restore your body's balance and function, allowing the exhausted overworked tissue creating your pain to relax and repair naturally.

Gentle sustained pressure applied to the fascial system with Myofascial Release techniques allow the body to unwind, as the fascial system releases its traction or twists on the body. Some patients feel their body becoming lighter, begin to twitch or feel their body moving during treatment. This is a natural process and is our body's own inherent self correcting mechanism. Patients will be encouraged to allow this to happen and to become more aware of what they are feeling during treatment to assist the process and ultimately take control of their health.

What can Myofascial Release treatment help with?

  • Chronic pain
  • Back ache & pelvic imbalance
  • Neck & shoulder pain & tension
  • Headaches
  • Jaw discomfort, teeth grinding & clenching
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tennis and golfers elbow
  • General discomfort & muscular spasms
  • Trigger point formation/pain
  • Eye strain & sinusitis
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • IBS
  • Menstrual discomfort
  • Fibromyalgia & ME/CFS
  • Plantar fasciitis & heel spurs
  • Sporting injuries
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Whiplash
  • Post surgical & injury scarring
  • Chronic pelvic pain syndrome
  • ...and many others

Myofascial Release treatment can also increase energy, restore muscular function and postural alignment, relieve physical and emotional strain, increase awareness of holding and bracing patterns, promote relaxation, balance the body & mind and promote self-healing.

What can I expect when I come to the clinic..?

Treatment begins with a discussion followed by a postural and palpatory evaluation. Patients are treated in underwear or if they prefer, loose fitting shorts and for the ladies a back fastening bra or T shirt with straps. Patients are covered with a sheet or towel whilst on the treatment table.

Treatments can be hourly or 3 hours long (the Mini Intensive). The mini intensive allows for an immersion of MFR that patients feel is very rewarding, as is allows time to work the entire framework and create a more natural and functional balance conducive to the healing process.

How many sessions a patient needs is determined by the level of dysfunction and the environment the patient is working and living in. Tension can harbour pain so home programmes and advice on breaking habits help will maximise the effectiveness of your treatment. It is better to have treatment sessions closer together initially in order to break habitual holding and bracing patterns and to reinforce new strategies.

How much will this cost?

Everyone is different and so are your needs. Depending on your assessment, you may need just 2 or 3 sessions and for more long standing and complex problems, you may need several treatments. Depending on the stresses you go through and once you are problem free, you should come for reviews (every month/6 months) to pick up problems early and make sure they stay away, just as you do with your dentist.

A normal treatments session takes 1 hour and costs £50. Longer treatment sessions are also available if required - £75 for 1½ hours and £140 for a 3 hour mini-intensive treatment.

"For as long as I can remember my body has felt heavy and painful. As a child I assumed this was how bodies were- watching people dance and play sports filled me with puzzlement – how did they manage to get their bodies to move so freely? I was in my 20s before realising that not everyone felt the way I felt. Over the years I made many attempts to "get fit" but always met with failure as my body just seized up and became even more painful.

Now, at the age of 61, I have discovered Myofascial release and for the first time no longer feel barred from physical activity nor condemned to drag my body about to the end of my days. After only 10 hours treatment I felt huge relief not only physically but mentally and emotionally too. I was delighted but assumed this improvement would be short lived – not a bit of it. The release and relief I felt has been sustained and, with further treatment has been improved upon – and my long held dream of being a fit and active person is well within my grasp."

"I have suffered from TMJ problems and chronic myofascial pain in my neck, shoulders and face since I was sitting my 'A levels' 20 years ago. Over the years I have tried every type of prescription and non-prescription painkiller and anti-inflammatory drug, as well as anti-depressants. I've been to see numerous dentists and a maxillofacial surgeon and had thousands of pounds worth of dental treatment to try and correct the problem.

I have been to see physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, acupuncturists, a Chinese herbalist, a homeopath and a kinesiologist. I have tried using a TENS machine. I've tried Pilates, and Yoga and meditation. But none of these have provided lasting relief. Then a couple of months ago I read a book on trigger points and MFR therapy and thought I would give it a try.

The results were amazing. For the first time I feel I have found a treatment that can unravel the chronic tension in my muscles that causes me so much pain, I just wish that I had discovered MFR 20 years ago."
