Physio For Musicians

Musicians spend numerous hours in one position, it's the nature of the beast.

And many suffer physical problems which cut short careers. Musicians subject themselves to unbearable physical strain, to keep getting the best jobs and to stay ahead in your field. It is a tough realisation that you need to look after your body, particularly as the years roll on, so you can keep performing.

Poor, lopsided and sustained postures cause muscle imbalances, joint stiffness, nerve injury and muscular problems which increase over time. Keeping physically healthy is essential if you are to continue to play and perform at your best. For this reason, the right physiotherapy and advice will help you not only play better, you will find it easier to cope with the physical demands of practice and performance without discomfort.

Treatment of music related injuries are extremely complex and you need to see therapists who understand and analyse the stresses you go through.

To address every aspect of your problem to prevent it from affecting your performance, your best results come from:

  • Body treatment to loosen up your tight muscles, nerves and joints
  • Specific exercises to give you control over developing problems
  • A look at your techniques and how you address your instrument, by a good teacher
  • Regular treatment (Physio 6 monthly, massage (often monthly) to keep you loose and prevent problems from beginning

How much will this cost?

Everyone is different and so are your needs. Depending on your assessment, you may need just 2 or 3 sessions and for more long standing and complex problems you may need several treatments. Once you are pain-free, you should come for check-ups every 6 months/yearly to pick up problems early and make sure they stay away, just like you do with your dentist.

Your initial 45 minute Physiotherapy Assessment costs £49, and then regular 30 minute review sessions cost £40.

"Training to be a professional musician is extremely demanding, both mentally and physically. It is not always appreciated just how athletic an activity it is, requiring a great amount of stamina as well as the ability to to cope with stress. One of our teachers' main priorities has always been to make sure that students are set up technically and posturally so that they can cope with these stresses and can continue to play throughout their lives without damage. So many musicians have ended their careers prematurely due to physical problems - often related to poor posture.

Kirsten and her dedicated team of physiotherapists have helped us - and me personally - in this, over many years. She has given workshops at the school, which have been helpful to many of our students, a number of whom have been to her clinic. The fact that Kirsten is herself a musician is an important factor in her ability to understand musicians' problems. I have also been extremely impressed by the dedication and thoroughness of her staff."
