Hyperventilation means increased breathing rate. When your rate increases over time, the body's blood gas balance is altered which leads to an increased alkalinity, causing symptoms which often mimic muscular and joint pains.

Other symptoms include:

  • Pins and needles in hands/arms or around mouth.
  • Feeling tired.
  • Dizziness/ light-headedness.
  • Frequent yawning or sighing.

Most people are not aware that they are breathing faster than they should and Hyperventilation is commonly linked with anxiety and stress. It has been found that if you suffer from asthma, your problems may stem from an increased breathing rate (Hyperventilation) rather than the asthmatic condition itself. By learning how to control your breathing rate, you will reduce breathing difficulties and a significant number of your symptoms often go.

Hyperventilation is usually treated in combination with manual therapy as you have often developed areas of tightness, particularly in your spine, which contribute to your pain. Treatment is extremely effective and involves assessing your breathing pattern to see whether you suffer from hyperventilation. If you do breathe rapidly, your Physio will teach you a variety of easy techniques to control this, which involve:

  • Correction of breathing pattern.
  • Posture re-education.
  • Relaxation techniques.

How much will this cost?

Everyone is different and so are your needs. Depending on your assessment, you may need just 2 or 3 sessions for breathing retraining, and sometimes more if you need manual therapy to loosen out your tight tissues. You should then come for check-ups every 6 months/yearly to pick up any further problems early, and make sure they stay away just like you do with your dentist.

Your initial 45 minute Physiotherapy Assessment costs £47, and then regular 30 minute review sessions cost £38.
